Cyber-Bullying, finally something being done?

Friday, November 20th, 2009

I decided I wanted to know a little more about this little known subject and then in turn share my findings with the masses. Firstly I thought that if you’re logging onto social networking and seeing offensive material why not just stop using those sites? But with that being a somewhat narrow minded opinion (bolstered by the frowns and comments from the guys in the office) I needed to dig deeper…

Wikipedia seem to have a good description of what it is; “…when the Internet, cell phones or other devices are used to send or post text or images intended to hurt or embarrass another person…” ok, that’s clear cut but there’s also Cyber-stalking which is the same thing only in adults so its specific to age too, nought beyond teenagers it seems.

So what has been happening? What is so bad that it’s making some children incredibly depressed and some even suicidal? I’m certainly not going to rake at old wounds so to speak as I wouldn’t want to recount bad memories for people but this is certainly a growing concern. It boils down to spiteful teenagers picking on other teenagers usually in groups – something that’s been going on in playgrounds for decades – but now bullying has turned ‘virtual’. I know that BEBO are taking steps with its new ‘Panic Button’ but could we not show our children how to ‘Print Screen’ so as to gather evidence on the offenders? Surely presenting a small stack of screen grabs with the names or even pictures of the offenders to police would be enough to warrant a visit to see that child’s parents? Some may argue that this would only make things worse but if you feel so depressed as to being near suicide then it couldn’t really be any worse.

I still feel that if parents were made aware of what their children were actually doing online instead of just answering ‘yes’ when asked ‘can I go on the computer please’ this would be more of a step in the right direction. The internet is a VERY powerful medium; if parents fail to put any restrictions in place on the computer then their kids have access to ANYTHING! I’ve had the internet for many years now and I can safely say I’ve seen things I wish I hadn’t, often sent via Email from friends or colleagues, some funny some completely unfunny – some downright disgusting to be honest. Operating systems are now implementing more parental controls to allow parents more control but do parents know or are indeed aware that this exists? Perhaps a campaign to all desktop/laptop manufacturers to include a guide to setting up parental controls bundled with all hardware would be sufficient. The excuse ‘Computers scare me’ from parents needs to be a thing of the past.

Second hand XBox 360 anyone?

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Just a little follow up to a previous story, though this was a little amusing maybe even a little ironic. Turns out after the mass banning of live accounts which have modded consoles EBay has been bombarded with second hand console with the tag line “100% working offline”. Curious to know if all those people will be re-buying the 360, after all they’ll have to start buying games now regardless, not a prospect I think any of them will relish…

The Top 10 most endangered technologies

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Pixmania, the largest electronics retailer in all of Europe, has formulated a list of technology that it predicts will meet its end in 2010 – just over a year! Some of them I can agree with but most I don’t.

1. DVD Players

Hhmmm the humble DVD player, the trusty dust gathering box that has sat under your TV for years, I fail to believe that in around a year these will no longer be a part of our lives. I’m not ready to chop in my 300+ collection for a mere handful of Blu-Rays.

2. The Fax Machine

Interesting one, I think theses MUST be being phased out now, Email is surely the preferred media for sending messages business to business. Although I don’t think they will disappear completely in just over a year.

3. Aanlogue TV

Not actually being switched of totally until 2012 so I think there will still be people watching grainy, low quality picture for the next couple of years.

4. The Landline Phone

Really? I mean the home phone? I doubt it, have you seen how much a lot of 08 numbers cost from a mobile? Smart or otherwise its pricey.

5. The Mobile Phone Charger

Strange one this, perhaps my previous article on the Powermat may shed some light on my views.

6. The Wii Remote

This is, in my opinion, probably the silliest one Wii sales still top the 8 million mark – almost twice the sales of the Xbox 360 and the PS3 put together. The recent release of the Wii motion plus will ensure a good future for Nintendo’s gem of a console.

7. Sat-Nav Devices

Tricky one this, mobile phones are starting to do more and more – including Sat-Nav capabilities, so I guess an in car kit maybe much cheaper than a whole separate system.

8. 3G Dongles

How much does it cost to put a sim card in a laptop? Exactly…

9. Computer Mouse

Sure, and replace it with what? There’s some good touch screen tech out there right now but I can’t see everyone using that tech for a long time yet.

10. Chip And Pin Credit Cards

Lot of things floating around at the min about what will replace chip n’ pin, fingerprint technology being at the forefront.

Looks like some good calls and some not so good calls in my opinion, but what do I know, I’m not Europe’s largest electronics retailer ;)

One Million Users Banned From Xbox Live!

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

This story is a bit of a no brainer really – what did people think was going to happen? Modifying your console so you can download and burn games may seem like a good idea but in the end you’ll lose out.

Xbox-360-Elite-2

These are comments from a self confessed ‘pirate’;

“…The Xbox for me is just about playing online, that’s why I love it – well did! It was a big day yesterday, the latest game we’ve been waiting months and months for. We’ve played the whole series and this one’s come out, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. All loading up, everything’s going well, I was happy. It came on to the start screen of Call of Duty and I thought, ‘Do you know what, let me quickly sign in online’. I sign in online and next thing I see, ‘Your console has been banned from Xbox’. I was pretty distraught at the time, I can’t remember exactly what it said but I saw the words ‘banned’ and I was gutted, completely gutted. At first I was in shock, I mean it’s always at the back of your head using pirate games you know there’s that possibility but you haven’t heard about it, there’s been no warnings and you haven’t heard it happen to anyone in the last two years…”

“…I wasn’t expecting it. I was just like, ‘OK, what do I do now? Is this just a joke?’ So I thought, ‘Let me restart the Xbox’. I restarted, signed in again, same message. I did that three times, same message. I was pulling my hair out thinking, ‘No, why me?’It’s like telling someone their dogs just died. It was pretty much like that for me. I love it, I love playing Xbox live. I play with my mates all the time. It’s just a good laugh, we all sit there chatting, playing games. Now I don’t know what to do…”

“…I still think they should lower the prices. There are 16-year-old kids out there, they don’t earn money so they go screaming to their parents saying, ‘Can you buy me this game?’ Fair enough, one game once in a while but the amount of games coming out, good games, everyone wants to play them all. And for them to pay £50 a game? I’ve probably saved about £600 and I’ve copied roughly 30 or 40 games. A lot of them I’ve downloaded or I’ve taken off friends that have downloaded themselves. To be honest, I’ve contemplated whether to move to Playstation 3 or buy another Xbox. I wouldn’t do it again but I really don’t know if I’m going to get the Xbox again now…”

So this guy is called Raz and these were his comments after having had totally free gaming for 2 years and self confessing to downloading and burning up to 40 games! He claims to have saved around £600 but the figure is closer to £1500. Sure games aren’t the cheapest media on the market but Sainsburys are doing the new Call Of Duty game for £26 – I fail to believe any fan of the genre (being an 18 cert game) couldn’t afford to buy it at that price, if you’ve been waiting for release.

Lesson learned I say, you got away with it for 2 years…

DELL and AMD give birth to new Zino

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

It looks like DELL and AMD have gotten together to create a new lightweight yet powerful small form factor PC called the Zino. Looking at taking the crown from a large portion of the tiny multimedia HD PC market the Zino does boast quite an impressive spec. Models start from a nifty 1.6ghz AMD Athlon 2650E with built in HD3200 gfx, 2 gig of RAM, 320gig hard drive, DVD burner, n draft wireless, external SATA port with windows 7 x64 home premium installed! This opening spec will cost you £299 which includes VAT and shipping – not at all bad for the spec, although you can ramp it up…

Max specs obtainable are; AMD x2 6850E 1.8ghz, windows 7 x64 home premium, 8 gig of RAM, 1 terabyte Hard Drive, HD 4330 gfx, Blu ray ROM drive, wireless keyboard/mouse, n-draft wireless, external SATA ports. Sure it’s punchy but it will cost you a cool £838.98 but measuring less than 8” square is a lot of grunt for such a small unit
